The Church of St Catherine Laboure Subiaco marked its 60th anniversary last November, and its small faith contingent are hopeful, that it will exist long enough to reach its next milestone.
The ‘Chapel of Ease’ which belongs to the Cathedral Parish, was officially blessed at its Bedfore Ave, Subiaco on 3 November 1957 by the late Most Rev Archbishop Redmond Prendiville.
The building was constructed by designer Stan Costello of Kalamunda.
The principal celebrant of the 60th anniversary Mass, on the morning of Sunday 19 November 2017, was Perth Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB.
The Mass was concelebrated by Fr Connor Steadman and assisted by Deacon Bruce Talbot.
Chapel Sacristan Jenny Oxbrow was pleased with the landmark of what was “a great success for such a tiny, little community”.
“We had about 65 people there. That doesn’t sound like much, but 65 is pretty good because we usually get between 20 and 40 at Mass,” she said.
Priests from St Mary’s Cathedral celebrate Mass at St Catherine Laboure every Sunday at 8.30am.
Barry Butterly, a Dubliner living in Cape Town, was present at the special Mass last November in Subiaco.
“The Mass was well attended by the local congregation and the service was very much in keeping with the celebration at hand,” he said.
“It was a lovely occasion which I will always fondly remember.”
