Living out the call of being a visible sign of God’s presence in the world was the message Bishop of Broome, Christopher Saunders had for newly ordained Deacon John Bosco last week.

Deacon Bosco, originally from Hyderabad, India was ordained to the Diaconate by Bishop Saunders at St Benedict’s Church, Applecross on 10 November.

His ordination to the office of Deacon will now take him to the remote parts of the Kimberley in far north Western Australia, where he will join some 15 clergy members in the Diocese of Broome.

The Mass, celebrated by the Bishop of Broome, was concelebrated by St Charles Seminary Rector Father Philip Fleay and priests from across the Archdiocese of Perth.

In his homily, Bishop Saunders expressed what an exciting time it is to enter into ministry, given the state that the world is currently in.

“In so many ways that the world we live in seems to be in some form of crisis. So it is indeed a challenging time to be alive and ready for ministry.

“Yet, as complicated as it is in this world of ours – as complex, challenging and tumultuous as it is, nonetheless it is a great time to minister.

Bishop Saunders added that he believes there to be no greater calling today than being the visible sign of the presence of God amongst us, and had some words of advice and encouragement for Deacon Bosco.

“It is only in the knowledge and love of Him, that we may find our way through the difficulties of our age,” he said.

“Do not turn back from the challenges even though they appear to be enormous. Stand fast as the one who proclaims the Gospel. Be confident that you have Christ with you and God on your side.”

After thanking everyone who has helped Deacon Bosco along on his journey so far, Bishop Saunders said he felt privileged to now have the new Deacon as part of the family.

“I am confident that this young man who begins this ministry tonight, will be somebody who will contribute to the life of the Church in such a magnificent way.

“May God’s choicest blessings be with you now and always as you serve the Lord with all your heart, mind and soul,” he concluded.
