A gala afternoon of music in honour of a good cause was all it took to unite the Holy Family Church, Kalamunda Parish, community on 22 September.

Dressed in their best Sunday wear, more than 350 parishioners filled up every pew in support of efforts to raise funds for an extension that was recently completed, and will provide an appropriate space for the parish administration and pastoral needs.

Event organiser Jane Pike confirmed that more than $7500 was raised from the event and a substantial donation by the San Leonie group presented to Parish Priest Father Antony Suresh at the conclusion of the concert, added to the figure.

Mrs Pike, who has a professional life-long involvement with opera and musical theatre, said she volunteered her extensive contacts to secure some of the best local talents and musicians to perform a concert of popular classical and light opera.

Before the event began, Fr Suresh welcomed guests and gave thanks to God for the opportunity to fellowship.

Music is the only art of heaven given to us, where words fail, music speaks. So we pour out our praise through music to God and I thank you for all your support,” he added.

The performers took turns to deliver their pieces, primarily accompanied by organist and Parish Council President Harry Muller who shared his delight on what he felt like being involved in the fundraiser.

“The parish community love hearing the music and the music was indeed stunning – this gives us performers the opportunity to showcase what I believe is God’s talents inside His church.

“There are also quite a few people who are not from the faith or non-Catholics today who are showing their support to us – so this is a great way to welcome them and give them an unforgettable experience and memories to cherish,” he added.

Jleana Otto-Johansen, a Mezzo Soprano opened the show with her emotional rendition of the classic tune Ave Maria. Juan Luis Cidra (tenor) channelled a more dramatic persona in his two performances singing Amapola Sib and O Sole Mio, Alessia Pintabona (soprano) stunned with O Mio Babbino Caro and Vaga Luna Che Inargenti, along with John Milton (tenor), who was particularly thrilled about being given the opportunity to perform Panis Angelicus for the first time.

Another highlight from the afternoon was a special performance by teenage parishioner Kelsi Brennan, who performed a piano solo instrumental piece titled Lieder Ohne Worte. Ms Brennan mentioned that it took her seven months to prepare for her performance and was ‘excited to be able to use her talents for a great cause.’

Also making special appearances throughout the show was senior violinist Dan Carney who accompanied several singers and even belted out a solo piece.

After the concert, all present were invited to share in a high-tea prepared by the ladies of the parish.

Parishioner Theresa Miller said the event was a great opportunity to connect with the community while enjoying great music.

“This was such a beautiful occasion, we are so excited to help the parish community and just to have a day where we can sit back, relax and enjoy some of the beautiful classics from the talented performers,” she said.

Fellow parishioner John Humphries echoed similar sentiments adding that he thoroughly enjoyed the show and hopes that more social events could be organised within the parish as it creates more opportunities for parishioners to bond and grow together on a deeper level.

The new space is scheduled to be blessed by Auxilliary Bishop Donald Sproxton next week after Sunday Mass.
