Already available in North America and Europe, the Catholic channel Shalom World has now launched in Australia.
Falling under Catholic media ministry Shalom Media, Shalom World Australia was officially launched in Hobart last month by Archbishop of Hobart, Julian Porteous on 26 January.
The new television channel will broadcast 24/7 Catholic content in high-definition, with Archbishop Porteous adding at the launch ceremony that the channel ‘will surely play a vital role in the spiritual nourishment for the people of this nation.’
Archbishop of Perth Timothy Costelloe SDB has previously endorsed Shalom World Australia’s work, together with President of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference and Archbishop of Melbourne, Denis Hart.
Archbishop Costelloe referenced a letter by Pope St John Paull II on launching the Church into the third millennium, with the unchanging message of the Church, grounded in the Gospel and tradition.
“This is exactly what Shalom World is seeking to do. To proclaim the beauty of the person and the message of Jesus to a new generation, and to do so using all modern methods of communication.
“It is my hope and my prayer that Shalom World will be a faithful and attractive vehicle for bringing the Good News to the people of our beautiful country,” he said.
Shalom World Australia Communications Manager Cyril Abraham said the channel will produce content that is faith-filled, virtue-building, character-based, and family-friendly.
He added that the aim and hope of Shalom World Australia was to reach out to all Australians.
“Shalom World Australia supplements the pastoral efforts of the Church to spread the Good News of the Gospel.
“We were previously running on content from the United States, but what will happen now is a shift to Australian content relevant to the audience here.
“Basically, an Australian Catholic channel for Australian audiences,” Mr Abraham said.
“What we’re aiming for is to reach out to the whole country and spread the peace and joy of Jesus Christ into each and every heart around Australia.
“We hope we will be able to collaborate with the Parish Churches in the country and bring to the forefront the good works of the Church through all modern means of communication,” he said.
Three original series of talks already feature Australian preachers, including Robert Falzon of Men Alive Australia, Mark Doyle of Net Ministry Australia and Sister Hilda Scott of Jamberoo Abbey in Wollongong, with a completed production with Perth local Alan Ames coming soon to the channel.
More religious and lay preachers from Australia will also be featured on Shalom World Australia through its numerous original productions over the coming months.
Shalom World Australia can be viewed on various platforms for free, including all the latest Smart TV’s and connected TV’s such as Apple TV, Roku, Xbox One, and Opera TV, or online at www.ShalomWorld.org.
The Shalom World app is also available for free in the App Store and Google Play.
