Bishop Don Sproxton has last week praised the blessing and opening of the new Identitywa office in Balcatta as an opportunity to “praise God our creator, who gives us courage and strength.”

Staff from across the Archdiocese of Perth joined with Identitywa Board members and staff, as well as people supported by Identitywa for the occasion, which commenced with a Welcome to Country by Noongar elder, Betty Garlett.

In blessing the new premises, Bishop Sproxton acknowledged the important work of Identitywa, one of WA’s largest disability support agencies.

“Forty years ago a group of families came together who wanted more than what was currently available for their sons and daughters with disability,” Bishop Sproxton explained.

“This led to the beginnings of Identitywa, which is an important social outreach of the Archdiocese of Perth.

Identitywa has a range of services located in the northern suburbs including nine shared houses and comprehensive family support services for children and adults.

“It is critical that we are present in the communities we are working in and we are committed to increasing our outreach,” said Identitywa CEO, Marina Re.

“Identitywa North means that our staff are located in the community where the people we support live.

“This provides an accessible point of contact for families and the individuals living in the northern corridor,” Mrs Re said.

“2017 marks our 40th anniversary which is a significant achievement for our organisation and, of course, the Archdiocese.

“With its support we now have three offices located south, north and our head office in Northbridge which offers greater flexibility and responsiveness in assisting people who are seeking our support.”

Identitywa offers support for In and Out of Home, School Leavers, Supported Living, Children and Adult Houses for short term breaks and Community Connections.
