The Knights of the Southern Cross has announced it will provide financial support to restore Geraldton’s historic cathedral.

The Catholic Diocese of Geraldton is undertaking a major project to restore, conserve  and enhance the heritage-listed St Francis Xavier Cathedral, designed by the priest-architect Mgr John Hawes, and its precinct.

It is anticipated that the work will be completed in time to celebrate the cathedral’s 100-year anniversary in 2016.

The Order in Western Australia has pledged $125,000 to support the project.

The first of three instalments was presented to Bishop of Geraldton Justin Bianchini by the Knights’ State Chairman, George Sekulla and Acting State Executive Officer, Peter Lewis at the Frock Up for Francis Cocktail Party last October.

The well-attended cocktail party raised a significant amount for the restoration.

“Over the years, the Order in Western Australia has been involved in supporting many worthy projects and we are truly delighted, as the ‘Bishop’s Men’, to be part of this magnificent undertaking,” said George Sekulla.

“This contribution complements the previous very generous support for the Perth and Bunbury Cathedrals.”
