Hundreds of books were on sale over the weekend at Pater Noster Catholic Church’s annual book fair in Myaree.

Although the final figures are yet to be finalised, it is believed the event raised significantly more funds than last year’s book fair.

Organiser Margaret Cabassi said the event was a great success.

“We had so many books, we asked all the parishioners, the Santa Maria school and our small parish school here to bring in their books about three months ago,” she said.

Students from CBC and Santa Maria College assisted with preparation for the book fair as part of the Christian Service Learning program.

Mrs Cabassi said the parish’s book fair committee had spent most of the year preparing for the event.

“We stay back on Friday mornings after 9am Mass and we sort out all the books into their categories like biographies, hobbies, gardening, sport, craft, fiction, and then we put them all under their surnames,” she said.

Some of the books that were not sold during the weekend will be kept for next year’s fair, while others will be sent to Save the Children Fund, according to Mrs Cabassi.

The money raised from the book fair will be used to help to cover some of the unpaid costs from the construction of the church in 2007.

This was the fourth time the parish had held the annual event.
