Staff and students of Kolbe Catholic College in Rockingham were delighted to welcome Perth Auxiliary Bishop Donald Sproxton to their school grounds on 11 November.

Received into the College by the two Ministry Captains, Jack Mulqueeney and Giorgia Priede, Bishop Sproxton was invited to take a tour of the school along with St Bernadette in Port Kennedy Parish Priest, Fr Gavin Gomez.

As they walked, the two captains spoke to Bishop Sproxton about the significant growth the school has experienced since its establishment in 1989 and the quality learning opportunities it now offers to students of Rockingham and nearby suburbs.

Auxiliary Bishop Sproxton was taken on tour of the College and expressed his gratitude and admiration to the students and the greater school community for their dedication to both teaching and learning and for holding an admirable saint such as Maximillian Kolbe in such high regard. It did not take long for the group to reach the School Chapel – a place which offers students a quiet place for prayer and contemplation and where Mass is celebrated weekly, Tuesday through to Friday, at 8.10am.

Mr Mulqueeney and Ms Priede pointed out some of the symbols in the Chapel to Bishop Sproxton and explained their meaning and connection with the life of Saint Maximilian Kolbe.

Bishop Sproxton expressed his gratitude and admiration to the students and the greater school community for their dedication to both teaching and learning and for holding an admirable saint such as Maximillian Kolbe in such high regard. He was also highly impressed with how Kolbe College had grown as a community since his last visit, ten years ago

As Chairman of LifeLink, the Archdiocesan umbrella organisation that provides for the ongoing financial and promotional support of agencies established or assisted by the Church, Bishop Sproxton was especially impressed with the KolbeCare, the school’s Christian Service Learning program

KolbeCare encourages students to be ‘other-centred’ by serving those in need and enables them to use and develop their talents in the service of others in the tradition of St Maximilian Kolbe.

At the end of the tour, Auxiliary Bishop Sproxton and Fr Gomez sat down to lunch with the Ministry Captains, Head of Religious Education, Mr Damian Ramos and some of the students who attended this year’s World Youth Day in Poland.
